Hi, my name is Gaël. I’m currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology. In this conference I will present you the importance of quorum sensing in the virulence of Borrelia afzelii. I think everyone knows these little arthropods we call ticks. These arthropods were infected by microorganisms called Borrelia afzellii and can cause Lyme disease. Lyme disease is a zoonosis which adopts several clinical aspects (dermatological, neurological).

Hello, I’m Clémence Journeau and currently in the second year of a master degree in Microbiology and Immunology in the University of Poitiers. For my final internship, I have an amazing opportunity to learn from research directors, who work in the International Center of Research in Infectiology at Lyon (I2BA team). This 6 months experience allows me to work on Francisella tularensis, a bioterrorist bacterium, to search the function of IglF, a specific protein. It is integrated in the type VI secretion system, a molecular crossbow able to inject various effectors in the host cell : the protein is located in the spike of the T6SS but its sequence isn’t described in other bacteria, making its function unknown. Technical alternatives must be explored to identify the role of IglF in the T6SS and its dynamics. Thus, I’ll focus on 2 main axes after creating bacterial mutants: the functional axis by doing immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry ; and the microscopic one by observing the phenotypic changes and the T6SS activation in mutants. Because Francisella tularensis is very pathogenic and able to induce a life-threatening zoonosis, I’ll use the species Francisella novicida as a lab substitute thanks to its high similar genome (97% of common nucleotides).

Hello my name is Anaëlle and I will explain to you the topic of my internship. I guess a lot of you know about the Lake of St Cyr and do you know some cyanobacteria lives there? But what is cyanobacteria, it’s a microorganims whose development depends on light and temperature but some of them produce toxins that can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, skin irritations and death in humans. The development of cyanobacteria and/or the production of toxins are controlled and monitored from a health point of view and can lead to swimming or fishing bans. During this internship to better monitor and understand the development of these bacteria, rt-qPCR experiments, elisa tests of the bacterial culture will be carried out. I hope that this short summary has made you want to attend the symposium.

I'm Médéric. I'm (almost) a doctor, but I'm also a Master's student in Microbiology and Immunology. My favorite subject is antibiotic resistance for a number of reasons. Indeed, I think it’s at the same time one of the most important subjects of research nowaday, and its importance will increase in the future. So my internship subject is focused on Helicobacter pylori, the only bacteria living in the stomach. This bacteria carries almost 50 % and it’s the only bacteria able to induce gastric cancer. Not every strain of H. pylori induces cancer, but only some of them have specific virulence factors able to induce cancer. Unfortunately, and like many other bacteria, H. pylori becomes more and more resistant to antibiotics, and it becomes hard to eradicate them. So, the aim of my internship is to determine if it’s useful or not to treat everybody carrying it. Indeed, eradicating an H. pylori strain carrying virulence factor is recommended, but it’s maybe not required to eradicate H. pylori strain which does not carry the virulence factor able to induce cancer.
